Client Overview

Construction Group, based in Europe, is a leading firm specializing in the preservation and restoration of historical buildings. Their projects span centuries-old cathedrals, castles, and government buildings, each requiring detailed documentation and precise planning.

Project Overview

In one of their largest projects, Construction Group was tasked with preserving the historical integrity of Cathedral, a 500-year-old building in dire need of structural repair. Manual surveys had previously been employed, but they lacked the precision and depth needed to plan an efficient restoration. The firm needed an innovative solution to capture accurate data, without damaging or altering the building’s original structure.
Clients turned to Scan to BIM technology to generate a detailed 3D model of the cathedral’s interior and exterior. Using laser scanning, they captured millions of data points, providing a high-resolution digital twin of the building.
The 3D model created from Scan to BIM was then imported into a Building Information Model (BIM), enabling the Construction Group’s architects and engineers to assess the cathedral’s structure comprehensively. The BIM model allowed for virtual walkthroughs, precise measurements, and a clear view of all structural elements.

Challenges

One of the most critical aspects of the Scan to BIM process for the Cathedrals Project was identifying structural challenges that required immediate attention. The point cloud data revealed areas of the cathedral where structural deformities had occurred over time. For example:
  • There were visible cracks in several key load-bearing walls.
  • Some of the masonry had eroded, requiring immediate restoration.
  • The wooden beams in the cathedral’s roof were showing signs of decay.
By analyzing the BIM model, Construction Group was able to prioritize areas of the cathedral that needed urgent structural reinforcement. The model also allowed engineers and architects to experiment with different restoration solutions, simulating the impact of various materials and techniques before implementing them in the real world.

Solutions

Once the laser scan data was delivered to ProtoTech’s team, our highly skilled engineers and architects used advanced BIM software like Revit to convert the point cloud data into a fully functioning 3D model. This model allowed for an intricate analysis of the cathedral’s architectural features and structural integrity.

Step 1: Importing Point Cloud Data

The first step in the process involved importing the point cloud data into Revit. Revit’s advanced features allow for seamless integration of point clouds, which serve as a reference for creating precise 3D models. Each point in the cloud represents a specific location on the cathedral’s surface, enabling our team to model its complex geometry with extreme accuracy.

Step 2: Model Creation and Detail Replication

Once the point cloud data was imported, the ProtoTech Solutions team began the task of recreating the cathedral’s geometry in BIM. Using Revit’s parametric modeling tools, we modeled everything from the building’s exterior walls to its internal features such as columns, arches, and windows.

Revit’s versatility allowed us to replicate the cathedral’s most intricate features, ensuring that every historical element was captured and preserved in the digital model. For example, we were able to:

  • Model the cathedral’s soaring arches and ribbed vaults
  • Recreate the complex geometry of flying buttresses
  • Accurately replicate the stained glass windows, including their unique shapes and dimensions
  • Document structural deformities caused by age and environmental factors

Step 3: Planning for Future Maintenance

In addition to providing a digital blueprint for immediate restoration, the BIM model generated by ProtoTech Solutions will play a vital role in the long-term preservation of the cathedral. The digital twin can be updated over time to reflect ongoing changes, repairs, and restorations. This ensures that future restoration teams will have an accurate and up-to-date representation of the cathedral, making their work more efficient and less invasive.

Moreover, the BIM model can be used for predictive maintenance. By regularly scanning the cathedral and comparing new data with the existing model, maintenance teams can identify potential structural issues before they become critical, helping to preserve the cathedral for future generations.

Benefits

  • Precision and Accuracy: Scan to BIM captures millions of data points via laser scanning, creating a highly detailed digital twin for precise historical preservation.
  • Collaboration & Communication: It improves collaboration among architects, engineers, and restoration teams, ensuring everyone is aligned using the same data.
  • Long-Term Maintenance: BIM models assist in long-term building monitoring, tracking changes, and identifying areas for ongoing attention.
  • Digital Archives: The 3D models serve as digital archives for future restorations, education, or virtual tours.
  • Tech Integration: BIM models integrate with AR/VR, offering interactive experiences for restoration teams and public engagement.
  • Sustainability: Digital planning reduces the need for physical interventions, supporting sustainable preservation practices.
  • Future-Proofing Historical Structures: Scan to BIM provides a future-proof solution for maintaining historical buildings, allowing restoration teams to update the digital model over time and guide ongoing preservation efforts for future generations.
