Unity3D: GAME ON!!!!
Unity (also called Unity3D) is a cross-platform game engine with a built-in IDE developed by Unity Technologies. It is used to develop video games for web plugins, desktop platforms, consoles, and mobile devices, and is utilized by over one million developers. It grew from an OS X supported game development tool in 2005 to a multi-platform game engine. It is interesting to note that games such as Bad piggies, Temple Run 2 and Game of Thrones: Seven kingdoms all have been built using Unity 3D.
From notion to motion
In May of 2013 Unity Technologies announced that Unity for Android, iOS, Windows Phone 8 (in beta), Blackberry 10 (in beta), and Windows Store 8 Metro (in beta) are included with the free Unity license.
Everything in Unity3D is derived from a GameObject. Every visible item, every character, every behavior all are part of the game object. Once you absorb this concept, Unity is extremely easy to learn and start game development.
Many video tutorials are available on Unity3D and the unity forum is surprisingly quick. People get back to you with answers, sample codes, etc almost immediately. Active community helps you to easily overcome roadblocks and also to share your clever techniques with others.
Scripting inside Unity consists of attaching custom script objects called behaviors to game objects. Different functions inside the script objects are called on certain events. Unity supports C#, JavaScript and BOO as the scripting languages. MonoDevelop open-source integrated development environment nicely works with Unity to help you with debugging and scripting.
There are a variety of plugins for Unity that help you to integrate social networks, transactions, Adverts, etc. Should you need to access some platform-specific SDKs, U3DXT is doing a great job of exposing iOS SDK API from C#, JavaScript, Boo for users to make use of features such as in-app purchase, Social framework, etc.
Physics, collision detection, particle system, animation, Shaders, and many such features are power-packed into unity and all of these significantly speed up the game development and make it easy for maintenance. Unity asset store lets you download awesome 3D models, animations, and sounds for your game needs.. The store is not huge but has sufficient assets to get you started.
All in all, Unity is one great choice for game development!! I strongly recommend game developers to try this powerful engine. If you are stuck somewhere while developing your game idea, I would be happy to guide you. Contact us
