Why are BIM & Revit the future of the digital building construction industry?

In the construction industry, BIM and REVIT are the two most popular digital building applications. Building Information Modeling (BIM) creates a 3D database to represent a building design. Revit is actually part of BIM softwares and it works specifically to create a digital version of the building.

Many people confuse the process and connection between BIM and Revit. BIM has been in existence for over 10 years and uses dynamic, CAD, and 3D design to create a model that can be viewed from different angles and effectively visualized to eliminate errors. Revit is a modeling program that works in both 2D and 3D design, working as a database storing stages in a building life cycle. Revit is useful as it effectively implements BIM in the digital building industry.

Using BIM and Revit to create a 3D design of a building is useful in a myriad of ways. 

  1. 3D software helps eliminate errors that may occur in a simple, traditional, 2D design. By visualizing the building in a different manner, it gives architects and buyers alike an opportunity to experience a building and determine if it’s safe and satisfactory. 3D designs offer extra safety in construction, allowing one to identify any areas of weakness before building begins. 
  2. BIM cuts down on costs and also cuts down on risks to construction workers. By having 3D designs to plan out each construction project, one can be assured of costs per square foot and more. Additionally, BIM and Revit cut down on insurance costs which means fewers claims, which saves money for the construction company in the long run. Having a safer construction site based on a 3D design is safer for both the company and the workers. As knowledge is power, a buyer can be assured of the final outcome of a building, thereby avoiding costly changes further on in the process.
  3. A building created from BIM or Revit creates an overall better building experience. A contractor can be confident in the design, allowing all members of the crew to work more comfortably and speedily. Buyers can approve a building early on, saving on costly remodels or changes. By identifying structural deficiencies early in the process with 3D designs, one can create a safer, better build, which satisfies both the workers and the buyers. 
  4. Lastly, a model created from BIM and Revit is useful throughout the entire building’s life. Data from the initial new build can help the building evolve and grow through a change in ownership, as facilities and such may need an upgrade. At the end of a building’s life, the model will be helpful in determining the most effective way to destroy the building, making 3D models from BIM and Revit invaluable throughout the lifespan of buildings. 

 

By utilizing old information in a new way, BIM and Revit offer opportunities to create different building designs, as well as traditional ones, in a safer, more concise manner. A digital model offers an opportunity to assess structural flaws, thus allowing for experimental designs that previously may not have been possible with 2D technology. 

From small-scale projects like houses to large scale projects like the Crossrail Project with the London Underground, more and more engineers, contractors, architects, and more have realized the value of BIM and Revit. From efficiency throughout the entire process to saving money, 3D design in the form of BIM and Revit are the future of the construction industry
