Adopting BIM Solutions for AEC Industry

Building Information Modeling (BIM) Services is a novel approach towards design and documentation of building projects of various types.

It gives insight and tools to plan, design, construct, and manage buildings and infrastructure to the architects, engineers, and construction (AEC) professionals. The Design Process over the years has evolved from Hand Drafting to CAD, and now BIM is being widely used to address the increasing complexities of a project and for its better preparedness.

Assisting the AEC Industry in this endeavor are technology frontrunners, led by Autodesk and its product Autodesk Revit 3D Drafting, which helps in creating a BIM Model to address the key principles of Construction, which are Man, Material, Money and Time.

Buoyed by Technology

A software toolkit can be adapted or used to build a variety of BIM solutions, having access to relevant software programming skills. The existing Buildings are scanned through Point Cloud Technology, which is further translated towards BIM and Realty Modeling from a C++ library called Point Data Abstraction Library or PDAL. It helps the BIM Modeler in processing data from the Point Cloud.

Another tool to create 3D Models from imported Photographs and Laser Scan is AutoDesk ReCap Pro. This tool captures data with an accurate measurement, markups and wider degrees of collaboration. When it comes to collaboration, AutoDesk Forge improves access to visualization options like Augmented Reality(AR), Virtual Reality(VR) & Mixed Reality(MR) along with workflows and other design & engineering data.

With all these software being used, interoperability becomes critical, which is where the products from Open Design Alliance, like Drawings SDK, Visualize SDK, BIM SDK come forth. Another tool called XEOGL, is a library for Visualization and 3D Modeling.

What it Does for You

The inception to end workflow of the BIM and 3D Modeling Process involved Conceptual Design, where the preliminary design concepts based on clients guidelines and the designer’s vision is captured and is created into 2D & 3D Floor Plans, Furniture Plans & other services plan. To enhance the visualization and for a more realistic experience, AR and VR Processes are incorporated, which helps in experiencing the project even without any action on the real construction process. Once they are finalized with alterations and modifications, if any, Revit 3D Drafting comes into the picture, where the BIM Model is automatically being created as the .rvt file. Within this BIM Model, our Structural Engineering, MEP Engineers and Architects, or domain modellers, create Structural, MEP and Architectural BIM Model respectively, which are further integrated into the complete BIM Model. This Model can be developed with multiple degrees of precision called Level of Development such as LOD 100, 200, 300 etc. They can be used at Conceptual Design, Schematic Design, Design Development stage etc and clients chose for higher LODs with more complex projects such as Hospitals, Data Centers, Hotels etc., which has been helping the professionals obtain better project outcomes saving on the cost, time, materials and money.

The ProtoTech Advantage

ProtoTech brings to table its vast experience and expertise, in both implementing information management processes undertaking BIM projects and authoring projects, company, national and international standards.

Right from capturing data through 3D Scanning and Photogrammetry, to Point Cloud Processing of the data gathered through them, to perform BIM and Reality Modeling based on that data. We are also competent in performing Structural Analysis through Revit 3D Drafting which is also used for Architectural Design and MEP Design.
