BIM Object Modelling: The Top 5 Considerations

1. A BIM object’s weight should be kept to a minimum
Lightweight BIM objects are a must, yet some BIM object providers fail to deliver. Have you ever had trouble opening a browser due to slow internet? OR A HUGE EXCEL FILE THAT NEEDS; this happens when single BIM items are too heavy and loading a project takes forever. Even downloading new BIM object models to software can take a long time if the BIM object provider does not validate the object sizes and download timings.
The ratio of usual model size to modelled volume (MB/m3) or typical calculation time to model size (mins/MB) is often requested by designers. Though not directly comparable, these problems arise when designers compare the performance of various software. Ask ten different construction companies how long it takes to build a building per m3, and you’ll receive ten other replies. Lightweight BIM objects are a basic need for BIM object providers. You require small BIM objects with a uniform validation process.
2. A BIM object that is intelligent is more than a 3D model
Smart BIM objects contain lots of data and measurements for calculations. The construction industry believes that the more information in a BIM object, the better.
The actual intelligence in BIM objects is in the data analysis. We, software engineers, know what end-users require and why you shouldn’t overload BIM objects with metadata, making designers’ jobs harder. There is no universal data standard yet, and things with different parameters can never be used by artificial intelligence. Many items must be cleaned before use.
To make BIM objects intelligent, incorporate necessary data while keeping them simple. Don’t be deceived by data volume. Simple, consistent, and organized information will benefit the end-user the most.
3. Different levels of detail (LOD) for various phases of design
LOD represents the geometric detail level of components in a BIM model for various project phases. Again, there is no worldwide standard for LOD, but having varied LODs for objects is significant today as they are used in the design process.
We provide three parametrized LOD levels derived from 3D object generic shapes and parameter-driven primitives. LOD 200 is used to optimize complex designs’ performance in the concept design process. The object can be utilized as LOD 300 for design coordination and decision-making. Their plan is recognisable. LOD 350 provides comprehensive geometry with complete product details. Architects can use this to design luminaires.
The LOD may raise BIM objects’ size and installation time, but a good BIM object provider will guarantee this does not happen.
4. Is it possible to obtain BIM objects from third parties?
During the design process, designers will gather data from several sources. The data is often unstructured and in various formats. This is a real issue for designers. There may be a mix of generic and individual manufacturer items in the digital twin of the building. It’s a significant issue when trying to create accurate data-rich models. Cleaning up project files takes time for designers.
Try to imagine being a designer. Do you prefer to get structured and certified BIM objects from your favorite manufacturers or use the information they supply in alternative formats and structures? Due to the lack of industry standardization, manufacturers cannot create their own Revit families. Today, making suitable MEP BIM objects demands software industry knowledge and experience, which MEP manufacturers often lack. Owning and maintaining libraries has hidden costs. The industry’s largest software developers have the most up-to-date understanding of BIM object modelling rules and parameters. The BIM objects must function in many applications and platforms and yearly updated versions.
5. When BIM modelling of objects is insufficient
Some products come in bespoke sizes, and choosing the right product may need a set of specifications. A predetermined selection of BIM objects is not the easiest way to make items available to end-users. Manufacturer software selection tools and plugins can help designers pick products faster.
The selection and configurator tools are customized for each manufacturer’s product logic and guidelines. They assist the user in selecting and configuring the appropriate product for the job at hand. Plugins are add-ins for design software such as Revit that incorporate current selection and configurator features. This integration enhances the design experience by automating time-consuming processes and expanding the BIM designer’s capabilities. The majority of BIM object providers cannot provide selection and configurator tools and plugins, which would enable MEP manufacturers to maximize the benefits of digitalization.
