Engineers use all kinds of tools for designing. The design process is complex and so are the design tools – they are complex and costly too.
This becomes a key obstacle when it comes to sharing the design. Need to share the design tool to share the design itself just doesn’t work.
Most of the modern tools solve this problem by allowing their users to export the design for publishing and sharing.
The most common publishing formats that are popular for 3D data are
3D PDF (.pdf), WebGL (.html), OBJ (.obj).

The main advantages of allowing your users to publish the design are :

  • Allow user to share 3D data easily. The published data can be exchanged over an email.
  • Publishing formats (3D PDF, WebGL) are universal and do not require specialized software to view. E.g. 3D PDF files can be viewed by Acrobat
  • Reader which is free and believed to be installed on 97% of Windows PCs. WebGL (.html) can be viewed in most of the web browsers
  • Published data can protect your design IP by not giving away the original analytical (BRep) model. There can be further security measures taken while exporting viz. Password protection, disabling measurements etc
  • Published data can be reviewed with ease and not only provides 3D manipulation, can also include model tree, animation, 2D annotations and PMI data

If you think users of your application will benefit from being able to publish 3D data, then ProtoTech has a few simple solutions. We have SDKs (Software Development Toolkits) which can be easily integrated into your application and enable export to 3D PDF, WebGL or OBJ formats. The SDKs offer a very simple interface (API) and can be integrated in just a week or two. Our 3D Export SDKs export following formats
